Among the particulars of office which is en-

closed you will notice that one of the Senior Clerk's duties is to dictate (to the Chinese Postmen) in Chinese the address- es on letters for local delivery. This refers to addresses written in English but not in Chinese, and may at first sight appear to be a duty requiring considerable knowledge of the Chinese language, but I am advised that since with few excep- tions the Chinese know the streets by their English names, all that is required is to learn the few exceptions and the nums- rals in the Chinese language which can be done in a very short time.
